Lesson 3

Just a little summary of our last lesson:

In the beginning of the lesson we watched an excerpt of the movie "What women want" (be careful with the pronunciation!). This extract was divided into two parts. In the first part, Nick the main actor, talks with his boss who was at a board meeting just before.

VOC POINTS:
board meeting = council that administers the company (=conseil d'administration)
a boarding house = a place where you can eat and sleep

(snip..snip)

(james moved the rest of this post to the class writeboard... please see the full version of our class minutes there... Thank you Laure and Jon for a job well done!)

5 Reasons to Deploy a Corporate Social Network

5 Reasons to Deploy a Corporate Social Network:

This is sort of nice... there's a slide show to get the message across.... what do you think? Facebook anyone? james
"5 Reasons to Deploy a Corporate Social Network Social networking appeals to business users for many reasons. The software makes it easy to find people and information, understand the relationships and communication patterns that make a company tick and create a common culture across large organizations."

Facebook used by business

Facebook used by business:

"Social networking guru dana boyd stirred controversy this summer by writing about class divisions online. The Berkeley doctoral student noted that Facebook is used by kids more likely to go to college while MySpace is more popular among students expected to get a job or join the military after high school.

These broad generalizations about services with millions of users apiece seem to be shared by some buttoned-down financial service companies seeking to tap the youth market via social networks. As social nets gain popularity as business tools within the enterprise, companies continue to reach beyond the firewall and use the technology for marketing purposes as well. For a growing number of big banks, Facebook is the place to be."

It seems that facebook is indeed the place to be... even for banks! read on.... look at the related links too...

Social Networks at Work Promise
Bottom-Line Results
By Edward Cone
Social networks are thriving within a growing number of companies, and bottom-line expectations are high for the technology and the culture it engenders.

"Some companies discourage their employees from using social networks at work, fearing lost productivity and wasted time. But the nation's fourth largest bank is getting ready to roll out one of its own.

Wachovia plans to introduce its social networking service to its 110,000 workers by early 2008. Like the popular Facebook service, the network will allow users to upload photos of themselves—not just corporate ID mug-shots, either—and personal information. Community-building across the vast company is one of the goals."

Doctors click to networking

The following just seemed to me to be a good answer to Stan's question about these "social networking" websites.

US doctors may not have time to be out of the office with colleagues playing golf anymore, but they might be found clicking away online (on a social networking site) instead.

Vatican reveals Templar secrets

Vatican reveals Templar secrets

VATICAN CITY The Knights Templar, the medieval Christian military order accused of heresy and sexual misconduct, will soon be partly rehabilitated when the Vatican publishes trial documents it has closely guarded for 700 years.

It is publishing only 799 copies of the minutes of trials against the Templars, Processus Contra Templarios - Papal Inquiry into the Trial of the Templars, which will sell for €5,900 (£4,115).

The giant work will come in a soft leather case, with detailed reproductions of original Latin parchments and the wax seals used by the 14th-century inquisitors.

“Nothing before this offered scholars original documents of the trials of the Templars,” said Professor Barbara Frale, a medievalist at the Vatican’s Secret Archives.

The Templars were founded in 1119 by knights sworn to protect Christian pilgrims visiting the Holy Land. Legends of their hidden treasures and secret rituals and power have featured in films and bestsellers such as The Da Vinci Code. (Reuters)

Why blogging about an English-English dictionary site (not even a French-English dictionary ;-))?
Because you can hear how to pronounce words! and it is really great.
It is very useful when preparing a talk or when debating with other people on this subject (a few years ago I discussed with one of my colleagues on how to pronounce finite and infinite).

Guillaume and Thomas's interview with a young Mauritian

Interview by Thomas and Guillaume with Kunal, a student from Mauritius

(Where is Mauritius?)

Listen to the recording: kunal_interview.mp3 (32.5 MB )

This recording is a short interview of a young Mauritian named Kunal who studied at the Imperial College of London and then came to Telecom Paris in order to finish his studies and to learn more about IT.

The interview was about his studies and his experience in different cultures: the Mauritian culture, the English culture and the French culture.
We questioned him about his view of the working atmosphere in France and in England, about the main differences in relationships between the employees and the things that surprised him the most in those cultures.
We also tackled the subject of his career goals and asked him to explain his decisions.

We think that this interview is very interesting for various reasons:

- First, it shows us the importance of multicultural work environments in companies today and the way we will have to deal with them in our future professional lives.
- It also focuses on an interesting point: the use of new technologies in the professional world (videoconferences, podcasting…)
- Finally it describes quite well the evolution of mentalities today and how it affects job mobility for young people all over the world. Nowadays we are able to move wherever we want in the world to find a good and interesting job, as has certainly been the case for Kunal.

Guillaume and Thomas
thank you Kunal!

Google's Chief Culture Officier

Meet Google's culture czar | Newsmakers | CNET News.com: "Meet Google's culture czar"

interesting!

....

What do you do as chief culture officer?
Sullivan: I work with employees around the world to figure out ways to maintain and enhance and develop our culture and how to keep the core values we had in the very beginning--a flat organization, a lack of hierarchy, a collaborative environment--to keep these as we continue to grow and spread them and filtrate them into our new offices around the world.

We want all of our employees to play a part in being involved in keeping our culture the way it is today but also growing and developing it. So some of it is coming up with different programs or processes, and just being there to talk with people when they have issues, setting up Web sites where people can report bugs in their culture and ideas on how to improve it, and those types of thing.

It's hard to imagine how you can keep a flat organization with 12,000 employees. But what are the characteristics of the Google culture in general?

Sullivan: I would characterize the culture as one that is team-oriented, very collaborative and encouraging people to think nontraditionally, different from where they ever worked before--working with integrity and for the good of the company and for the good of the world, which is tied to our overall mission of making information accessible to the world.

Transmaterial

Transmaterial:

I mentioned this site in class....
just like the demo.com products (that you each have several documents about) this website shows real products that are transforming our world (and the marketplace)!
"In the United States there are 46,837 miles of highways with miles of sound barrier walls being erected daily to mitigate the negative impacts of highway systems on urban neighborhoods. At the same time, these transportation systems alone produce 1.4 billion tons of airborne pollution annually. With the increasing prominence of this additional component to our highway infrastructure, the public is beginning to demand a more appealing design solution to highway-generated air, sound, and light pollution.

In addition to mitigating sound and light pollution as present highway barrier systems do, the Superabsorber system also absorbs airborne pollutants. Designed by Douglas Hecker and Martha Skinner of Clemson-based FieldOffice, this innovative system has the potential to significantly reduce airborne pollution in urban areas with the application of photocatalytic cement products that have been demonstrated to reduce air pollution in urban areas by 50% when covering just 15% of urban surfaces. The inclusion of this surface application on future concrete barrier systems represents a significant amount of surface area for absorption of air pollution in urban areas."
