It seems to me that Zoho (www.zoho.com) could work offline but it is not free.
What will happen to MS Office?
I do no think that Office leading position will be threatened in the next years. I know even someone who could use very well a laptop despite it is a Mac and who could not read native openoffice documents ;-)

MS offers now for US customers Office Live Workspace. It is not exactly the same as Google Docs but I think it is the answer of Ms to Google Docs.

Let big companies fight for software as a service and let us play with LaTeX!

If we were rich, we would buy this new study by Forrester:

which could give some hints to software market evolution.
